At V5R3, IBM® i5/OS™ is shipped with a specialized WebSphere Application Server - Express Version 5.0 instance referred to as the System Application Server Instance (SYSINST). This document discusses the requirements and steps required to start the SYSINST.
To use the SYSINST, the following required prerequisites must be met:

5722SS1 Option 12 - OS/400 - Host Servers

5722SS1 Option 34 - OS/400 - Digital Certificate Manager (only required for SSL)
5722AC3 Crypto Access Provider (only required for SSL)
Note: The latest group PTF for WebSphere (SF99272) is also recommended.
The SYSINST is not deployed or started by default when i5/OS is installed. Before it can be started, the HTTP Administration instance must be started.
To start the HTTP Server Administration instance, do the following:
1 In iSeries Navigator, expand My Connections, and expand your system.
2 Expand Network -> Servers -> TCP/IP and right-click HTTP Administration.
3 Click Start Instance -> ADMIN.
4 Open a Web browser, and confirm that the Administration instance is running by visiting http://hostA:2001 where hostA is the name of your system.
5 Alternatively, the HTTP Administration instance may also be started from the command line of a display session using the following command:
STRTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(*ADMIN)
After starting the HTTP Administration instance, the system instance must be configured to deploy and start the SYSINST.
To have the iSeries configure and start the system instance, do the following:
1 Using a Web browser, go to the IBM HTTP Server Configuration and Administration forms by performing these steps:
a Open this URL in your browser:
http://your.server.name:2001/ where your.server.name is the name of your IBM® eServer™ i5 server.
b Type a valid user ID and password for your eServer i5 server.
c At the iSeries Tasks page, select IBM Web Administration for iSeries .
2 Click the Manage tab and the HTTP Server tab.
3 Select Admin from the Server drop-down list.
4 Under Server Properties, select General Server Configuration.
5 On the General Server Configuration page, click the General Settings tab.
6 Select Yes in the Start the system application server instance when the 'Admin' server is started field. It is recommend that Yes to Stop the system application server instance when the 'Admin' server is stopped, is selected as well. Then, click OK.
7 Stop and start the administrative instance, and the SYSINST is then created. The administrative HTTP server and the SYSINST are started. This can take some time so please be patient. It is very likely that the HTTP Administration instance will start well before the SYSINST becomes active. To check if the SYSINST is up and functioning, use the Work Active Job command to see if the QASE5 subsystem shows a job called ADMIN with a status of JVAW.
Once SYSINST has been created, change the setting to start it with the HTTP Admin server to No. SYSINST can manually be started using following the steps.
To start the system instance independent of the ADMIN HTTP server, do the following:
1 Using a Web browser, go to the IBM HTTP Server Configuration and Administration forms by performing these steps:
a Open this URL in your browser:
http://your.server.name:2001/ where your.server.name is the name of your eServer i5 server.
b Type a valid user ID and password for your eServer i5 server.
c At the iSeries Tasks page, select IBM Web Administration for iSeries.
2 Click the Manage tab and the Application Servers tab.
3 Select the system application server instance from the Instance/Server drop-down list.
4 Click Start to start SYSINST.
